The Summerhays family celebrated two wins at the 2021 Thunderbird Invitational, held March 13-14 at Papago Golf Club. Preston, 18, defended his title after a four-hole playoff, and Grace, 16, cruised to victory by five strokes.
With, no doubt, many other examples to choose from, here are a few JGAA alumni in recent headlines. Riley Lewis helped Loyola Marymount University Men’s Golf win back-to-back team titles for the first time since 2006-07 at the Sacramento State Invitational, March 1-2.
The Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) is hosting the Thunderbird Invitational at Papago Golf Course March 13-14. The field features 84 of Arizona’s best junior golfers (48 boys and 36 girls) ranging in age from 13-18 competing in the third PING Junior Masters Series tournament on the 2021 JGAA schedule.
Congratulations to our good friend Robin Farran! The United State Golf Association (USGA) recently awarded the Chandler resident and longtime supporter of the JGAA with the 2021 Ike Grainger Award.
JGAA alum Evan Johnson recently learned he earned the distinguished Evans Scholarship, “a full housing and tuition college scholarship awarded to golf caddies with limited financial means,” administered by the Western Golf Association.
One of only 20 junior golfers in the United State with a seat on the Gen Z Council, 17-year-old, JGAA member Abigale Morris is already hard at work alongside the golf’s “next generation” to encourage diversity and inclusion in the game.
The Phoenix Metro Junior Championship presented by Van’s Golf Shops teed off February 20-21, with the Boys Championship division competing at Stone Creek Golf Club. Bryan Beyer of Mesa opened a four-stroke lead in the first round after firing a 5-under 66, which included four birdies and an eagle.

Three former Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) members recently posted collegiate golf wins within days of each other. Trevor Werbylo earned a share of the individual and team titles at The Prestige held February 15-17 while Michael Feagles won both titles at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate contested Feb. 14-16. And Gavin Cohen prevailed in a playoff at the Nick Watney Invitational Feb 8-9.
