Anawin Pikulthong of Gilbert took top honors in the Boys Championship division at the Tucson Conquistadores Spring Classic, held April 27-28 at Silverbell and El Rio Golf Courses. Coincidentally, Pikulthong, 14, won last year in the 13-14 division.
The first local qualifier to enter the coveted IMG Academy Junior World Championship was recently contested at Whirlwind Golf Club’s Cattail Course April 13-14 with 19 Arizona junior golfers earning a spot into the championship to be held July 8-12 in San Diego.
For the second time this season, Scottsdale’s Preston and Grace Summerhays both took first place in their respective divisions at the same tournament. Preston, 16, shot 4-under 67 in the first round at the Bryce Molder Invitational held at McDowell Mountain Golf Club to sit one stroke off the lead before firing a 7-under 64 in the second round highlighted by eight birdies.
The only Arizona junior golfer in the field, San Tan Valley’s Alexis Vakasiuola is set to compete in the sixth annual Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals held at Augusta National Golf Club Sunday, April 7 and televised on Golf Channel 8 a.m. ET.

The 39th annual Desert Mashie Spring Championship teed off at Encanto Golf Course March 9-10. Hosted by the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA), the field featured 230 junior golfers – boys and girls – ages 8-18 competing in five age groups.
Chaz Aurilia of Phoenix fired a final-round 8-under-par 64, the low round of the tournament by three strokes, to win the Thunderbird Invitational – PING Junior Masters by five strokes. Aurilia, who finished at 9-under-par 135 (71-64) for the tournament, scorched the par 5s at Papago Golf Course both days with birdies on three of the four in the first round followed by back-to-back eagles and two birdies in the second round to go 9-under par for the eight holes.
The Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) is hosting the 25th annual Thunderbird Invitational, which tees off at Papago Golf Course March 2-3. The field features 84 of Arizona’s best junior golfers (48 boys and 36 girls) ranging in age from 13-18 competing in the third PING Junior Masters Series tournament on the 2019 JGAA schedule of events.
Gunnar Broin of Chanhassen, Minnesota sat three strokes off the pace after a first-round 70 before finally overtaking the field by three strokes with a second-round 68 to win the Raven Invitational – Fisher Bryan Golf Academy (FBGA) – PING Junior Masters.
