Cruz Carter & Alexis Vakasiuola Earn Championship Titles at Scottsdale City Junior Championship

The Junior Golf Association of Arizona wrapped up its final event of the summer circuit with the Scottsdale City Junior Championship, held Aug. 17-18 at TPC Scottsdale—home of the WM Phoenix Open—and Gainey Ranch Golf Club.

In the Boys Championship division, Cruz Carter of Scottsdale dominated with rounds of 66-69 for a 7-under-par total, winning by three shots over Kason Shotwell of Vail. Carter’s blistering 5-under opening round set the tone, and he closed it out with a steady 2-under to seal the title. Shotwell finished runner-up at 4-under, while Hudson Roberts claimed third at 3-under.

On the Girls Championship side, San Tan Valley’s Alexis Vakasiuola successfully defended her title at TPC Scottsdale. Highlighted by eight birdies and a 4-under 67 on day one, she never relinquished the lead, finishing at 4-under to earn her fifth win of the season. Tyla Greenwood of Tucson and Beau Ellington of Paradise Valley tied for second at 2-under.

In the Boys 15-18 division, California’s Grant Curtiss pulled away with a four-shot victory, posting rounds of 74-69 to finish at 1-over. For the Girls 15-18 division, Scottsdale’s Alyxandra Sumner captured her first JGAA victory, carding an 8-over total to win by six strokes.

At Gainey Ranch, Litchfield Park’s Nolan Wilson stayed red-hot, firing an 11-under total to secure back-to-back wins in the Boys 13-14 division. Scottsdale’s Malone Wall claimed the Girls 13-14 title, finishing 3-over (75-72) for a three-shot win.

The Boys 11-12 division saw Peoria’s Jackson Frey go low with back-to-back 34s, finishing 4-under to take the trophy. In the Girls 11-12 division, Chandler’s Amy Xuan added another win, shooting 36-37 to finish 1-over.

In the youngest divisions, Chandler’s Henry Schroeder edged out the Boys 10 & Under title by a single stroke at 7-over (40-39). On the girls’ side, Aviana Vilar continued her dominant run, earning her seventh win of the season with a four-stroke victory.
