Team Arizona is back in action this weekend, competing in the 58th annual Eddie Hogan Cup at Riverside Country Club in Portland, Oregon. The 36-hole team competition tees off Saturday, Aug. 8.
Representing Arizona this year are Easton Reischl of Scottsdale, Frederick Egnatios of Scottsdale, Owen Greenough of Chandler and AJ Ramos of Tucson, each of whom earned their spot through Arizona’s four Hogan Cup qualifying events: Warren Schutte Invitational, Scottsdale Charros Invitational, Thunderbird Invitational and Scottsdale Invitational. Reischl and Egnatios both punched their ticket at the Scottsdale Invitational, Greenough out of the Charros Invitational, and Ramos out of the Thunderbird Invitational. The team will be coached by Captains Scott McNevin, Executive Director of the JGAA, and Frank Calvin, Assistant Executive Director of the JGAA.
The Hogan Cup is a 36-hole team event pitting the top junior golfers from the Western United States and Canada against one another, with the three lowest scores from each team counting toward the daily total. Medals are awarded to the top three teams, as well as the top three individuals in the field. First played in 1969, the event has built a reputation as one of junior golf’s premier proving grounds.
Participating in the Hogan Cup gives players added exposure during the recruiting process. With AJGA and JGS points awarded for participation, the event helps improve juniors’ rankings against an elite strength of field. More than 20 college coaches from around the country travel to the event to find new recruits or secure commitments, and the team format helps prepare juniors to play in high-level team events, easing their transition to the college level.
Hogan Cup alumni include tour players such as Bobby Clampett, Fred Couples, Joe Rassett, Jack Renner, Lennie Clements, Scott Simpson, Rick Fehr, Robert Gamez, Bill Sanders, Kirk Triplett, Jim Nelford, John Fought, Peter Jacobsen, Jeff Quinney, Casey Martin, Jason Gore and Tiger Woods.
Arizona enters this year’s competition looking to build on last year’s podium finish, when the team took 3rd place at 5-under par at the 57th Hogan Cup, also held at Riverside. The state’s most recent Hogan Cup title came in 2022.
