The JGAA made its way south for the Bruce Brown Yuma City Junior Championship, held May 17–18 at Desert Hills Golf Course in Yuma, Arizona.
Mateo Berastegui of Phoenix put on a clinic in the Boys Championship division, delivering the two lowest rounds in the entire field. He came out hot in the opening round and never let up, carding back-to-back scores of 1-under-par (71-71-142). Fueled by nine total birdies and precision ball striking, Berastegui cruised to an eight-shot victory, marking his first win of the 2025 season after a trio of top-10 finishes earlier in the year.
In the Girls Championship division, Paola Guerrero of Green Valley earned her first victory of the season in convincing fashion. Guerrero posted a 17-over-par total, finishing six strokes ahead of Elizabeth Feliz of Yuma.
Each year, the Desert Hills event brings together local golfers and the wider Arizona junior golf community. In recent years, the tournament has taken on deeper meaning with the passing of longtime Desert Hills General Manager Bruce Brown. His legacy lives on through the Bruce Brown Memorial Scholarship, a heartfelt initiative launched in partnership with his wife Laura Brown, the JGAA, and the Yuma community. The scholarship honors Bruce’s memory by providing financial support to deserving JGAA athletes.
Additional division winners included:
- Boys 15-18 Division: Meyer Shill of Wellton shot 77-74 (151) to win by four strokes at 7-over par.
- Boys 13-14 Division: Brody Olayvar of Tucson posted 76-79 (155) to win at 11-over par.
- Girls 15-18 Division: Leila Miyasato of Peoria pulled away to win by six strokes.
- Girls 13-14 Division: Abby Kelly of Mesa edged out the field with rounds of 80-76 (156) to win by two strokes at 12-over par.
- All remaining age divisions featured solo competitors.
The JGAA thanks the Desert Hills staff, the Yuma golf community, and the Brown family for continuing to make this event a meaningful stop on the junior golf calendar.
