Earns 2022 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s golf individual championship
Rio Newcombe – Gilbert resident competing as a freshman for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions – fired 10-under 69, 69, 68 near home at Chandler’s Whirlwind Golf Club, earning individual honors at the 2022 RMAC Men’s Golf Championship held April 17-19.
Newcombe’s final round four-under par 68 included six birdies. He made the turn at 1-under par before carding four birdies, including three birdies on the final five holes, to claim the individual title.
Casteel High School class of 2021, Newcombe finished two strokes ahead of Andrew NI (Colorado State – Pueblo) and Zach Dallimore (Westminster College – UT), while also leading the Mountain Lions to a runner-up finish at 9-under-par 855, ten strokes off the pace set by Colorado State – Pueblo.
In 2021 JGAA competition, Newcombe started out with a third place finish in January, qualified for the US Jr Amateur in early June, and won the State Junior Golf Championship a week after that.
