The annual Superstition Junior Classic presented by Action Golf Carts and Mountain Brook Golf Club was in full swing, April 27-28, at Mountain Brook Golf Club. In the Boys Championship division, the first round belonged to Owen Greenough who put on a clinic and flirted with a 59. The Chandler resident rattled off six birdies and an eagle on the back nine to shoot 28 en route to a first-round 61, his lowest score ever recorded. Greenough continued to dominate throughout the event and didn’t take his foot off the gas. He only jotted down two bogeys over the weekend and ended up winning by a substantial margin. Greenough finished at 12-under par (61-67) to earn top honors by five strokes. The win is his first of the 2024 season. Mateo Berastegui of Phoenix and Hudson Ross of Scottsdale placed tied for second at 7-under par. And Brody Leid of Phoenix finished solo-fourth at 6-under par.
In the Girls Championship division, the opening round showcased three players tied at the top of the leaderboard at 2-under. Charlene Lamb of Scottsdale, Cynthia Lang of Chandler and Kaitlyn Helm of Litchfield Park all vied for the top spot heading into the final round. Riding the hot hand after last week’s victory at the Betsy King IMG Junior World Qualifier, Charlene Lamb caught fire on the final day. She recorded five birdies in the final round to one-up her score from Saturday to conclude the tournament at 5-under par (69-68). With this win, Lamb secures her second-consecutive victory of the season. Right behind her was Alexis Vakasiuola of San Tan Valley who finished at 3-under par for solo-second (71-68). Cynthia Lang of Chandler earned third-place honors at 2-under par for the event.
Emery Shroyer of Scottsdale emerged with top honors in the Boys 15-18 division after prevailing in a playoff against Miles Bauer of Scottsdale. Shroyer bounced back from an opening-round 75 with a 2-under 68 to force a playoff. The win marks his first of the 2024 season.
In the Girls 15-18 division, London Valdez of Gilbert posts a 82-74 to finish at 14-over par and squeak past the competition for a one-stroke victory. The win is also her first of the 2024 season.
