Max Lyons, a junior golfer at Marquette University, has clinched the postseason award of 2023-24 BIG EAST Conference Player of the Year, as announced by the league on Monday. This marks his second consecutive year receiving All-BIG EAST First Team honors, joined by graduate student Josh Robinson, while Aidan Lafferty secured second team accolades.
Individual winners and team selections were determined using the National Collegiate Rankings. Lyons showcased his dominance throughout the season, leading the BIG EAST with an impressive 72.33 stroke scoring average. His performance included 17 rounds at par or better, with five rounds in the 60s. Notably, his scoring average was plus-0.70 strokes to par, and he led Marquette University in six out of the 11 events held over the academic year.
Hailing from Phoenix, the JGAA alum achieved his season-best score of 9-under 207 at MU’s opening event in the spring, the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 11-13. Moreover, his 17 par-or-better rounds place him seventh in the program’s history for single-season totals.
This season saw Lyons ascend in the Marquette University career record book, securing third place in the program’s lore for career scoring average (72.47) and fifth for par-or-better rounds (45). He joins an elite group of Marquette men’s golfers to receive the league’s player of the year honors, including PING All-Americans Hunter Eichhorn (2017-18, 2020-21, 2021-22) and Mike Van Sickle (2008-09), alongside Patrick Sanchez (2014-15) and Oliver Farrell (2018-19).
We are so proud of everything Max has achieved this season and throughout his collegiate career at Marquette. Way to go Max!
