Scottsdale’s Matthew McCarty fired 25-under par (65-67-65-66) at Highland Springs Country Club in Springfield, Missouri to win the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper by three strokes over Tommy Gainey. With the win in his 68th start on the Korn Ferry Tour, the 26-year-old JGAA alum moved from No. 22 to No. 7 on the points list and secured his PGA TOUR card.
“It feels really good especially after last week,” McCarty said in the wake of a final-round 75 dashing his hopes of winning the week prior. “Just played great out there all week and really solid today, last week as well. It’s been kind of an up-and-down season for me; it’s great to finally get one and take advantage of the day. It was awesome.”
McCarty made his way to the Korn Ferry Tour after playing golf for Santa Clara University, where he was a five-year member of the team, appeared in 47 career events with a scoring average of 71.50, posted 20 top-10 finishes, and carded 82 rounds of par or better.
Before college golf, the class of 2016 Desert Mountain High School grad played in more than 60 JGAA tournaments beginning with the 10 and Under division in 2008.
So far, McCarty has teed it up in the big show only once, qualifying for the 2022 U.S. Open. However, if he is able to build on momentum gathered over a recent run of five-straight cuts made and four top-20 finishes, McCarty’s chances of breaking through have never been better.
Congratulations, Matt!
