The first PING Junior Masters Series event of the year kicked off at the Warren Schutte Invitational presented by Hilgers Orthodontics, founded and hosted by Valley Golf Instructor Warren Schutte. The annual Warren Schutte Invitational, held January 25-26 at Wigwam Golf Resort, invited the top players in the state to all compete. The weather was cold with frost delays in both rounds, but the players persevered. The 2024 Player of the Year Dylan Boenning of Phoenix won in the Boy’s Championship division.
Boenning put on a clinic from the get-go, firing off a 6-under 66 in the opening round. The field remained stacked after round one with six other players shooting in the 60s. After day one of play, Boenning and Finn Meister of Tucson tied atop the leaderboard.
The Washington State University commit looked to pick up where he left off last year. The final round proved just that with a near-identical 7-under 65 to close it out. His final round was highlighted by a bogey-free round and three-under par on the last five holes. With a final score of 13-under par, The win marks his first PING Junior Master Series win of the 2025 campaign. Future Ole Miss golfer Finn Meister and future University of Texas – Arlington player Ajay Morris of Avondale wound up tied for second at 7-under par.
In the Girl’s Championship division, also contested at Wigwam Golf Club, Julia Herzberg of Gilbert came out on top. The high school junior put together two rounds in the red to help seal the deal and claim her first JGAA victory since 2022. Herzberg also carded a bogey-free final round with four birdies to conclude the event at 5-under par. Aubrey Hilgers of Surprise and Asia Young of Oregon tied for second place at 2-under par.
The PING Junior Masters Series comprises five tournaments hosted at prestigious Arizona courses. Launched in 2015, this invitation-only series is designed for talented Arizona junior golfers eager to compete against their top-ranked peers in local competitions. Participation is restricted to junior golfers invited based on their national ranking by Junior Golf Scoreboard.
Openings for junior players from neighboring states will be dependent on availability at each event. Qualified junior players can sign up for the PING Junior Major Series by visiting www.jgaa.org.
