Dobson Ranch Golf Club and Viewpoint Golf Resort hosted the Mesa City Junior Championship, June 28-29. Brody Leid of Phoenix prevailed in a playoff against Nash Arthurs of Peoria after birdieing the first playoff hole to win the Boys Championship division, held at Dobson Ranch Golf Club. Brody (67) trailed heading into the final round due to Nash Arthurs throwing darts and recording his season-low score of 63. Arthurs’ record day included two eagles, six birdies and only one bogey on the round to post a nine-under 63. Arthurs lead would be short-lived however, as Brody started scrambling his way back in the hunt as he carded a five-under 67 in the final round to force a playoff. Brody ended the two rounds tied with Nash Arthurs at 10-under par (67-67). Hogan O’Malley of Tempe placed solo-third for the event after finishing just one shot back from being in the playoff at nine-under par (65-70).
In the Girls Championship division held at Viewpoint Golf Resort, and Alexis Vakasiuola of San Tan Valley kept her winning streak alive and intact. Alexis came out firing, with a first round three-under 68, which included six birdies on the day. In the second round, her solo lead was up for grabs as Jordin Cowing of Gilbert gave Alexis a run for her money down the final stretch. Cowing was dialed in as she went bogey-free in the final round to card a three-under 68 and put her in contention. It just so happened that Alexis Vakasiuola was not letting her foot off the pedal, as she went two-under par (32) on the front-nine in the final round to help solidify her position at the top of the leaderboard. Alexis Vakasiuola wound up at two-under 69 for the final round and ended the tournament at five-under to win by a stroke ahead of Jordin Cowing. Cowing finished in solo-second at four-under par (70-68), and two players finished tied for third place at one-under par: Angela Zhikun Chen of Chandler (74-67) and Charlene Lamb (70-71) of Scottsdale.
At Dobson Ranch, Jack Hackwell of Oro Valley won the Boys 15-18 division at two-under par (73-69). In the Girls 15-18 division contested at View Point Golf Resort, Rylee Stovall of Litchfield Park came out on top, posting seven-over par (70-79).
