Brennan Korn of Scottsdale won the Boys Championship division at the 2023 Tucson City Junior Championship, held May 31-June 1 at Randolph North Golf Course. At 4-under 68, Korn sat tied atop the leaderboard with Tyler Linam of Peoria, who tallied four birdies on the back nine in round one to take a share of the lead. Korn followed with a 2-under 70 in the second round to finish in first place at -6 for the tournament, two strokes clear of Linam (68-72). The win marks Korn’s first of the season, fourth in Tucson after back-to-back victories at the 2019 Tucson Conquistadores Spring Classic and Tucson Junior City Championship.
The Girls Championship division competition took place at Dell Urich Golf Course, with Rylee Salome out of New Mexico barely hanging onto the lead to finish in first place after a 69-68, 3-under par performance. She finished just one stroke ahead of Izzy Piazza (74-68) of Phoenix. The win marks back-to-back top honor accolades for Salome as she won the Tucson Conquistadores Spring Classic in her last JGAA appearance.
Owen Wackman of Cave Creek ran away with the impressive victory in the Boys 15-18 division, shooting 5-under-par shot 3-over-par 72-67 at Randolph North. Wackman’s second round 67 was the lowest round of any player at the event for 18 holes. At Dell Urich, Tucson’s own Zachary Schaefer won the Boys 13-14 division by a huge margin at 1-under par, taking the division by a whopping nine strokes. In the 11-12 division, Cason Dezzani of Scottsdale won after a 3-under par 32 in the second round to finish at even par. Maddux Zlotoff of Scottsdale finished -2 to win the Boys 10 and Under division.
In the Girls 15-18 division competition at Dell Urich, Charlene Lamb of Scottsdale shot rounds of 72-69 for the lopsided win at +1, ahead by 11 strokes. Hannah Nguyen of Scottsdale continues her hot streak this year and took the Girls 13-14 division at +8, 73-75 for her fourth win of the season. Hayden Nguyen of Peoria won the Girls 11-12 division after firing off 39-37 for a +6 performance. Jasmine Yamasaki of Tucson won the Girls 10 and Under division by one stroke after shooting 5-over par, 37-38.
The Michael J. Harris Core Values award is dedicated to the memory of Michael J. Harris. A longtime member of the Tucson Conquistadores, a Civic leader and philanthropist who was dedicated to the community, young people and embodied the aspiration that golf, like life, be enjoyed with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship. This year’s recipient was none other than James Labukas. In the past three years, he has been a junior First Tee coach and a junior coach with our 13U PGA Jr. League teams while participating on our 17U PGA Junior League Team. He is engaged as a teen with our First Tee-Tucson chapter and working to achieve ACE. James is an all-star caddie at Tucson Country Club with close to 100 loops in less than 2 years. James is the most requested
teen caddie at Tucson Country Club. He is an engaging and affable participant and our go-to guy to take out the trash, handpick the practice range with his shag bag and play the course with the younger kids.
When at work, he can greet most members of the golf course maintenance staff by name. James knows just about everyone and treats everyone equally and with respect. If a guy or a gal is on a mower or raking a bunker, James thanks them for grooming the golf course. He best represents the core values of respect, honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, perseverance, and courtesy to name a few.
