The Phoenix City Junior Championship took place July 20-21 at Legacy Golf Resort and Aguila Golf Course. Brennan Korn of Scottsdale kicked off the Boys Championship division at Aguila 18 three shots off the lead after finishing round one at 2-under 70. Andrew Bernthal of Phoenix was the man to beat after day one with a low round of five-under 67, including four-straight birdies on the final five holes. However, Korn caught fire in the final round and one-upped Bernthal’s 67 with a 66 of his own. Korn’s six-under-par performance in round two helped separate himself from the rest of the pack to clutch up for his second victory of the 2023 season. Highlights from Korn’s final round included an eagle on the par-4 17th and four birdies to cruise into victory at eight-under par. Xander Mulder of Scottsdale finished in solo-second with a four-under score in the standings. Peyton “PJ” Segerstrom of Queen Creek and Nash Arthurs of Peoria ended up tied for third at two-under par.
With a five-under par opening round at Aguila 18, Lily Huether of Tucson hit the ground running and never looked back. Huether had the lowest score out of the field in the Girls Championship division, which included a bogey-free round and five birdies on the day. Huether never let go of the lead and remained composed throughout the second round to secure her first win of the 2023 season. The Tucson native finished the event at three-under par and won by a resounding five strokes. Makenna Cox of Scottsdale ended up in solo-second with a two-over scorecard. With a tie for third, Charlene Lamb of Scottsdale and Aubrey Hilgers of Litchfield Park each finished at three-over par.
Cade Streeter of Oro Valley won in the Boys 15-18 division by two strokes at even par, shooting identical 70-70 at Aguila 18. Ethan Butters of Chandler had himself a day in the final round at Legacy Golf Resort with a clean scorecard and a bogey-free 62 (-9). Butters capped off the tournament with a season-low total score of 15-under par to win the Boys 13-14 division by nearly 20 strokes (65-62). Hagen Lancaster of Anthem goes back-to-back in the Boys 11-12 division after firing rounds of 50-55 to sit atop the leaderboard at Aguila 9 (played same nine twice). Lancaster sealed the deal in a playoff against Rydder Erbach of Scottsdale to secure the title. And Kyle Wojtcuk of Waddell took the Boys 10 and Under division in a playoff with a score of 5-over par (29-30).
The Girls divisions were all about repeats! At Aguila 18, Rylee Stovall of Litchfield Park goes back-to-back in the Girls 15-18 division at six-over par (73-77) to win by a wide margin, 13 strokes. At Legacy Golf Resort, Hannah Nguyen of Phoenix also goes back-to-back in the Girls 13-14 division at two-over par (72-72). At Aguila 9, Hayden Nguyen of Peoria won the Girls 11-12 division in back-to-back fashion at six-over par (55-59).
