AJ Ramos Shoots 59 at Starfire in Boys 13-14 Division at Sam Schanafelt Summer Classic

For the second year, the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) held the Sam Schanafelt Summer Classic in Scottsdale at Kierland Golf Club and Starfire Golf Club. Contested July 17-18, the event commemorates Sam Schanafelt, a fellow JGAA member who tragically lost his life in a 2022 automobile accident.

In the Boys 13-14 division at Starfire Golf Club, Tucson’s AJ Ramos fired an incredible 59, -11 in the opening round. Both a JGAA record low round and personal best, Ramos followed with a 2-over-par 72 in the final round to cruise to an 11-stroke victory, his fourth of the season.

In the Boys Championship division at Kierland, Jack Taylor of Scottsdale took first place in a playoff against Asher Nelson of Scottsdale after they finished regulation competition tied at -8. Taylor fired 66-70, while Nelson posted 69-67 to force the playoff against Taylor.

In the Girls Championship Division, Charlene Lamb of Scottsdale fired rounds of 70-69 to finish the tournament at -5, winning by two strokes over Lily Huether, of Tucson. who finished at 3-under par after shooting 70-71 to secure solo-second place.

The Boys 15-18 division at Kierland came down to the wire with Nolan Brunner of Prescott Valley shooting -6 (67-71) for the one-stroke win over Brennan Wiscombe of Phoenix. He finished at -5 after rounds of 69 and 70.

Isabel Helgemoe of Scottsdale swept the Girls 15-18 division by 10 strokes at Kierland, shooting 73-71 to finish the tournament at even par. Alexix Goyen of Mesa earned solo-second place after shooting back-to-back 77s to finish the event at +10. In the Girls 13-14 division at Starfire, Addison Taylor of Scottsdale fired a pair of 72s, 4-over par, to secure her win by two shots over Ariela Trejo of Tucson.

“The JGAA remembers Sam through the Sam Schanafelt Summer Classic,” said Scott McNevin, executive director of the JGAA. “The tournament recognizes Sam as not only a great junior golfer but a great person. He worked at Kierland Golf Club, so it means even more to host it where he spent so much time working and playing golf.”
