Held July 6-7 at Antelope Hills Golf Course, Scottsdale’s Trey Moore won the Boys Championship division at the Prescott City Junior Championship. He overcame a two-shot deficit in the first round, opened up by Xander Mulder, to win at even par for the 36-hole competition, one stroke ahead of Paradise Valley’s Scottie Belgrad and Scottsdale’s Thomas Caffarelli.
Moore (73-70) immediately caught fire in the second round, birding the first four holes to make the turn at 3-under par. He made two more birdies on the way in to shoot -2 for the day.
Belgrade (77-67), the defending champion, made a tremendous final-round charge, making six birdies on the day to post 5-under 67, the lowest round of the tournament. Caffarelli (74-70) took a wild ride on the front nine before easing into a two-birdie back nine to post a 2-under final round.
The win marks Moore’s second since May at the Bruce Brown Yuma City Junior.
In the Girls Championship division, Kaitlyn Morland of Scottsdale fired a steady, 1-over 72 on the North Course to open up a four-stroke lead after the first round. She followed on the South Course with a 2-under 70 for a three-stroke win at 1-under par for the championship. Second place finisher Mia Cesarek of Tucson, bound for Utah Tech University in the fall, made a bold final-round move, going 4-under through seven holes en route to a 68, the lowest round on the girl’s side.
Anthem’s Kate Connolly (78-70) shot 2-under par in the final round to move into sole third place. Soon to be playing golf for Drake University, Connolly shot 4-under 32 on her final nine of the championship to finish at +5.
Nathan Ash of Tempe won the Boys 15-18 division after shooting 75-72, 4-over par, and Romina Aguirre of Boca del Rio, Mexico (77-73) finished in first place in the Girls 15-18 division at +7. The Boys 13-14 division’s Zachary Schaefer of Tucson shot 5-under par (69-69) to win, and Hannah Nguyen of Phoenix (86-78) won the Girls 13-14 division at +21. Nolan Wilson of Litchfield Park won the Boys 11-12 division at 1-over-par 73 (38-35) while Hayden Nguyen of Peoria won on the girl’s side 11-12 at even-par 72 (35-37). Hunter Mirata of Gilbert won the Boys 10 and Under division at even-par 72 (37-35).
