Best finish since 2016
Team Arizona matched its best finish since 2016, shooting -2 after rounds of 208, 222, 216 to post a third-place finish at the 2022 Girls Junior America’s Cup, held July 24-28 by the Montana State Golf Association at Helena’s Green Meadow Country Club. They finished two strokes behind Mexico in second place and 26 strokes clear of first place, earned by Southern California for the third time in 10 years.
Scottsdale’s Gracie McGovern led team Arizona, finishing tied for fourth place individually at -7 after rounds of 67, 72 and 70. Tucson’s Zoe Newell pulled into a tie for 10th place individually. She fired rounds of 70, 73 and 73. Peoria’s Mattison Frick, who is headed for the University of Illinois, finished T32, and Talia Gutman, Sonoma State University in the fall, came in at T35.
Similar to collegiate events, the 54-hole competition allows each team to count its best three of four scores each round. The Girls Junior America’s Cup features 18 teams representing their state, province or country: Arizona, Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Mexico, Montana, New Mexico, Northern California, Southern California, Northern Nevada, Southern Nevada, Oregon, San Diego, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
