JGAA alumnus and Cal Poly freshman Frederick Egnatios shared the individual title at Northwestern’s Windon Memorial on Tuesday, closing with a three-under 67 to finish at eight-under 202, the third-lowest 18-hole score in program history, and splitting the championship with UC Davis’ Zhenxian Zhang.
Playing just his second collegiate tournament, Egnatios trailed Zhang by a stroke midway through the final round after a bogey, but birdied four of his last five holes, including the 18th, first, second and third in a shotgun start, to force a share of the title. His opening-round 65 on Monday also ranks as the third-lowest 18-hole total in Cal Poly program history.
The win marks Cal Poly’s sixth individual title in the past five seasons. As a team, the Mustangs finished seventh with a three-round total of 847, one shot off the program’s tournament scoring record, at the par-70, 6,716-yard Onwentsia Club.
Egnatios arrives at Cal Poly fresh off one of the most decorated junior careers in recent JGAA history. He was a perennial name in the Player of the Year conversation throughout his JGAA tenure, represented Team Arizona at the 58th Eddie Hogan Cup, and in July won the Boys 15-18 division at the Uswing Mojing Junior World Championship at Torrey Pines South, closing at 6-under par (68-69-73) to claim the title on one of golf’s most storied courses.
Egnatios and the Mustangs return to action Oct. 19-21 at the Saint Mary’s Invitational in Seaside, California.
