Gilbert’s Rylan Johnson fired 68-74-74-70, 2-under par, on Torrey Pines South Course to finish in solo-fifth place in the Boys 15-18 division at the 2022 IMG Academy Junior World Championship, held July 12-15. The 2021 JGAA Player of the Year in the Boys Championship division jumped out to a share of the first round lead, with a 68, which featured a 4-under 32 on the front nine. He cooled off in the next two rounds, shooting a pair of 2-over 74s, before moving back into red numbers in the final round. The soon-to-be Oregon State Beaver fired a final round 2-under 70 to finish nine strokes off the pace set by 2022 Boys 15-18 division champion, Taishi Moto, of Japan.
In the Girls 15-18 division, Scottsdale’s Gracie McGovern put up four steady rounds, 73-69-69-70, to finish tied for fifth place. In the first round, she carded two birdies and three bogeys. In the second she made four birdies and a lone bogey. She carded a bogeyless 3-under 69 in the second round, and covered two bogeys with three birdies in the final round to finish three strokes off the pace set by Keeley Marx of Australia at -10.
