Another action-packed edition of the JGAA’s PING Invitational is in the books. GCU played host July 27-28, and the tournament gave us textbook golf shots and low scores across the board. In the Boys Championship division, Nolan Wilson of Scottsdale produced back-to-back low rounds of 5-under 66 to stake his claim to the top spot. The most impressive feat of his masterful showing was the fact that he recorded only one bogey over the course of 36 holes.
Breathing down his neck the entire final round were Ryan Rasmussen of Surprise and Zachary Schaefer of Tucson, alongside a crowded leaderboard that kept things tight. Wilson held his nerve while Rasmussen and Schaefer kept applying the pressure, leaving no room for costly errors. Wilson strung together a bogey-free back nine and captured four birdies down the stretch. The closing 66 gave him a two-stroke advantage over the field, and he finished 10-under-par (66-66—132) to claim his second-straight JGAA title and third of the year. Wilson’s hot streak continues as he rides a wave of strong summer play. Rasmussen and Schaefer tied for second at 8-under par.
In the Girls Championship division, Lauren Richardson of Gilbert recorded her lowest score of the season with an opening-round 6-under 65. Unbothered by the pressure of defending the top spot, she stayed steady in round two, dropping two birdies and an eagle on hole 10 to post an even-par 71. Her strong finish earned her the division crown at 6-under (65-71—136), three strokes clear of Amelia Chen of Las Vegas, who finished second at 3-under (67-72—139). Rounding out the podium was Taylor Underhill of Gilbert at 1-under (71-70—141).
The Boys 15-18 division brought suspense, as Bryan Tarr of Phoenix held on for a narrow one-stroke victory at 2-over par (70-74—144), securing his second JGAA title of July. The Boys 13-14 division was a different story — one of domination — as Jackson Caldwell of Tucson won by a commanding six strokes at 8-under par, highlighted by a 7-under 64 to seal it (70-64—134).
Kyle Wojtcuk of Waddell turned in a well-rounded performance, clinching the Boys 11-12 division by two strokes at 4-under (34-34—68, nine holes each day), while Emery Bingham of Glendale won back-to-back Boys 8-10 titles by seven strokes with a 7-under 65 total (33-32—65).
On the girls’ side, Minzi Kim of Phoenix took home the Girls 15-18 trophy after defeating Kimsey Terrell of Phoenix in a sudden-death playoff. Yena Kim of Mesa claimed the Girls 13-14 division by three strokes with consistent play at 1-over (72-71). Keyanna Hattemar of Cave Creek took care of the Girls 11-12 field comfortably at 1-over (39-34), while Julee Diaz of Phoenix has now won six of her last seven tournament appearances in the Girls 8-10 division, finishing 1-under 71 (36-35).
