Notches first AJGA invitational
Longtime JGAA member Mahanth Chirravuri won the 2022 AJGA Simplify Boys Championship at Carlton Woods, with a final score of 12-under-par 204. This marked the first AJGA victory for the USC signee.
After holding the 36-hole lead, Chirravuri started the final round with a birdie on his first hole. He made the turn with three birdies and four bogeys, before finishing his final five holes with four birdies to card a 3-under-par 69.
The No. 57 player in the Rolex AJGA Rankings, Chirravuri hit key shots down the stretch to outlast Nicholas Gross of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, by one stroke. Although Gross battled valiantly down the stretch, the kicker came on the 18 hole where Gross finished with par at 11-under-par 205, while Chirravuri stuck his second shot three feet from the hole for an easy birdie and a hard-fought win.
The AJGA Simplify Boys Championship at Carlton Woods is one of the longest-running events on the AJGA schedule. Originally played in 1987, the tournament settled at The Club at Carlton Woods in 2009. The event has a storied past with champions such as Jim Furyk, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth.
A JGAA since 2010 when he was 8 years old, Chirravuri has played in more than 150 tournament entries in his JGAA career. Most recently he took T3 at the Warren Schutte Invitational, a PING Junior Masters tournament held at Wigwam Golf Resort. He also picked up two wins, two runner-ups and a fifth place finish in six events entered in 2021.
