The JGAA announced the 2016 Sportsmanship and Player of the Year Awards across five age divisions at the annual awards banquet held October 30 at Moon Valley Country Club. Former Major League Baseball Player and American Century Championship champion, Mark Mulder, was the guest speaker for the event.

“This is always one of the most rewarding evenings of the year,” said Scott McNevin, Executive Director of the JGAA. “And although a handful of players actually earn the award, many others put in the time and effort to win. All of this year’s award winners are not only talented players on the golf course, but truly display the characteristics off the course as well.”

Taking home the Girls Championship Player of the Year Award, Ashley Menne had one of the most successful seasons in JGAA history. She won 12 tournaments and finished in the top 3 in 19 of the 21 events she competed in while compiling a scoring average of 72.2 during the year. She also competed on the Arizona team in the Girls Junior America’s Cup and the USGA Girls’ Junior Championship.

In the Boys Championship Division, Hayden Sayre took the Player of the Year honors. Sayre finished in the top 5 in 9 of the JGAA events he played in, and had wins in the Arizona Junior Match Play Championship and the AM&E Classic presented by Bryce Molder, with a 2nd place finish in the Charlie Beljan Invitational. He also competed on the Arizona team in the Junior America’s Cup.
