Rising to the occasion. JGAA alumnus, Carlos Astiazarán, clinched the title at the 97th Mexican National Amateur Championship held June 5–8 at Guadalajara Country Club.
A Tucson native and current University of the Pacific star— soon heading to Vanderbilt — Carlos brought grit and confidence to the Guadalajara layout. His steady rounds of 70–67–72–68 (11-under 277) were a masterclass in focus, patience, and closing power. On Sunday, he carded a bogey-free back nine, sinking key birdies on holes 13 and 14 to secure a three‑stroke victory and don the prestigious Percy Clifford Cup.
The field was stacked: Alejandro Fierro, JGAA alum and Marquette golfer Vincent Cervantes, and Manuel Cue all finished three strokes behind at 8‑under. But Carlos pulled away when it counted most.
In a heartfelt moment, Carlos dedicated the win to his parents, saying it meant “a lot… with my parent’s present… I enjoyed the event a lot… thanks to the organization… ¡Qué viva México!”. His emotional celebration captured the spirit of growth, passion, and family support that defines JGAA.
The victory also grants Carlos exemptions into the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship and final qualifying for the 126th U.S. Open—opportunities that could catapult his amateur career even further.
This win adds to Carlos’s impressive resume, which includes a title at the Nick Watney Collegiate and a win at the Leadership & Golf Collegiate Championship. Currently ranked around No. 267 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, his form continues to ascend.
Carlos’s trajectory with JGAA is one to celebrate—not just for his triumphs on the course, but for how he represents the heart and hustle of Arizona golf. His story is a reminder: smart work, fierce dedication, and belief in yourself—no matter your zip code—can take you to the top.
