Jacob Medina and Alexis Vakasiuola Take Home Top Honors at the Maricopa Junior Championship

Jacob Medina of Oro Valley fired 2-under-par 70 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club to win the Maricopa Junior Championship, held July 31. He reeled off three birdies on the front nine on holes 4, 6 and 7 to make the turn at 1-under par. He then picked up two more birdies on the back nine to finish one stroke clear of two players tied for second place at -1, 71: Trevor Karber of Phoenix and Nicholas Lippe of Chandler. With a prior T6 best finish, the win marks Medina’s first in his 12th tournament entered, dating back to his first in 2020.

Alexis Vakasiuola of San Tan Valley posted a third win of her busy 2022 season schedule, also firing 2-under 70. She got it to -2 at the turn and managed to keep it that way after the final hole to win by one stroke over Zoe Newell (71) of Oro Valley. And Sierra Ashbaugh of Gilbert came in third place at 1-over-par 73.

Robert Brackett of Kingman won in the Boys 15-18 Division at even-par 72. Jack Abraham of Paradise Valley and Brady Sheridan of Glendale finished tied for first place in the Boys 13-14 division at 4-over 76, until Sheridan broke the tie to prevail. John Matheny III of Tucson prevailed in a playoff over Ty Gould of Gilbert after the two finished regulation play tied for first place at 1-over 37 in the Boys 11-12 division. And Kellen Amis of Scottsdale shot even-par 36 to win the Boys 10 and Under division.

Mackenzie Bream of Phoenix won in the Girls 15-18 division at 1-over-par 73. Izzy McGlone of Chandler won the Girls 13-14 division at 10-over-par 82. Taylor Underhill of Gilbert won in the Girls 11-12 division at 4-over-par 40. And Teria Williams of Avondale won in the Girls 10 and Under division at 16-over-par 52.
