Frederick Egnatios of Phoenix is a world champion. The future Cal Poly Mustang closed out the Uswing Mojing Junior World Championship at 6-under par (68-69-73) to win the Boys 15-18 division at the iconic Torrey Pines South Course, a venue steeped in U.S. Open history. It’s the latest (and biggest) chapter in what has already been an incredible run for one of Arizona’s brightest young stars, and the JGAA couldn’t be prouder to celebrate it.
The event, held July 5-9, drew more than 1,200 competitors from 56 countries across Greater San Diego, making it one of the largest junior golf championships in the world. Egnatios treated it like his own backyard. He opened with the tournament’s only back-to-back rounds in the 60s, firing 68-69 through the first two days behind eight birdies and an eagle on the opening round’s front nine. The performance put him in the lead — and put the rest of the field on notice.
Holding that lead into the final round is never easy, especially with a hometown contender lurking. San Diego’s Oliver Mayson kept pace deep into the front nine, tightening the margin and giving the leaderboard a genuine two-man race. Egnatios answered the way champions do: three birdies in a five-hole stretch pushed his lead back out and gave him room to breathe. A double bogey on 14 threatened to swing the momentum right back — but Egnatios steadied himself, closing with a pair of pars to lock up the title.
The win marks the second consecutive year, and third in four years, that a JGAA player has captured the Boys 15-18 division at Junior Worlds, keeping the sport’s most prestigious junior crown on Arizona soil. Dylan Boenning won it a year ago with a miraculous final-round charge of his own, and now Egnatios has added his name right alongside him. another proud chapter in the Grand Canyon State’s junior golf legacy.
Congratulations, Frederick! The JGAA family couldn’t be prouder to watch you compete on one of golf’s most challenging test, and we can’t wait to see what’s next. Tip of the cap to a true world champion.
