Brasen Briones and Makenzie Cooper Win Phoenix City Junior Championship

Brasen Briones of Tucson took control of the Boys Championship division early at the 2022 Phoenix City Junior Championship, starting with a 3-under 69 in the first round on Aguila Golf Course. He then came out firing in the second round, with three birdies in the first five holes to make the turn at 3-under par. Briones picked up four more birdies in the first five holes of the back nine to shoot a final round 6-under 66, finishing at -9 for the championship, five strokes clear of Nicholas Lyman Litchfield Park. He shot rounds of 72-68 to slide into solo-second place at 4-under par, with an eagle-3 in the final round on his highlight reel. And Ethan Hormann (72-69) of Phoenix made four birdies on holes 12-17 to shoot a final round 69, finishing in third place, one behind Lyman, six behind Briones.

Three players sat tied for first place at 1-under 71 after the first round of the Girls Championship division, also contested at Aguila Golf Course, until Litchfield Park’s Makenzie Cooper broke out of the pack in the second round with a 5-under 67. She finished at -6 on top of the Girls Championship division by nine strokes, with Brooke McGlasson (71-76) of Peoria coming in second place at +3. Six players finished in a tie for third place at +4:  Aubrey Hilgers, Abigale Morris, Cynthia Lang, Alexis Vakasiuola, Eva Heinz and Lucy Newell.  

In the Boys 15-18 division, Nicolas Drake of Mesa came in first place after shooting 1-over par, (75-70) at Aguila. And Emmie Rhude of Carefree won the Girls 15-18 division at +16 after two rounds of 80. Preston Brooke (71-69) of Gilbert and Zachary Schaefer (69-71) of Tucson finished regulation competition tied for first place in the Boys 13-14 division at -2 at Legacy Golf Resort, before Schaefer prevailed in a playoff. In the Girls 13-14 division Kaitlyn Moreland of Scottsdale took top honors after shooting 76-64, -2 for the championship.

Troy Stahl of Phoenix won the Boys 11-12 division, shooting 51-55, -2, at Aguila 9, while Taylor Underhill of Gilbert prevailed in the Girls 11-12 division, shooting 58-57, +7, at Aguila. In the 10 and Under divisions, Liam MacQueen of Phoenix fired 1-under par (24-29) for the win on the boys side, and Beau Ellington of Paradise Valley came in at -3, after rounds of 25-26 at Aguila 9.
