The 2024 JGAA season is officially underway. The first tournament to kick things off was a PING Junior Masters Series tournament founded and hosted by Valley Golf Instructor Warren Schutte. The annual Warren Schutte Invitational, held January 20-21 at Wigwam Golf Resort, invited the top players in the state to all compete. The former Curry Cup champion Ashley Shaw of Litchfield Park won in the Girl’s Championship division.
Shaw topped this year’s Girls Championship division, carding +3 with rounds of 71-76 on the Gold Course to win by a stroke ahead of Regan Dusenbery of Kansas who fired +4 (77-71) to come in solo-second place. Raegan Capizzi of Scottsdale, Alexis Vakasiuola of San Tan Valley and Kaitlyn Helm of Litchfield Park all tied close behind in third place at +6.
Wheaton Ennis was a stroke away from the three-peat but fell just short due to Adam Croix’s dominant outing in the final round. The leaderboard was packed at the top with mirror-like opening rounds from all three of the players mentioned above, but it was Croix that pulled through at the very end. Croix of Peoria set the tone in the final round with a tournament-low -4 (68) to jump out in front of Ennis and Spielman of Cave Creek. He winds up shooting -5 for the event (71-68).Three players finished tied for third place at -4: future Auburn Tiger Tyler Spielman (71-69) of Cave Creek; future Texas A&M Aggie Wheaton Ennis (71-69) of Chandler; and future University of Miami (Ohio) player Tyler Anderson (70-70) of Scottsdale.
The PING Junior Masters Series comprises five tournaments hosted at prestigious Arizona courses. Launched in 2015, this invitation-only series is designed for talented Arizona junior golfers eager to compete against their top-ranked peers in local competitions. Participation is restricted to junior golfers invited based on their national ranking by Junior Golf Scoreboard.
Openings for junior players from neighboring states will be dependent on availability at each event. Qualified junior players can sign up for the PING Junior Major Series by visiting www.jgaa.org.
