The Arizona Women’s Golf Association (AWGA) announced today the selection of the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) to receive the organization’s Legacy Investment Fund.
“In January 2022, the AWGA Board met to consider how best the AWGA should continue to support our golf community,” said Mary Pomroy, long-time executive director and current treasurer of the AWGA and new JGAA Foundation board member. “The JGAA closely aligns with the purposes we identified for the use of our assets, and have agreed to see that they are utilized for those purposes.”
Overall, the agreement codifies both organizations’ common goal of growing the game of golf for young and disadvantaged women. In particular, the funding will, at a minimum, bolster already proven programs such as the AWGA Scholarship Program; High School Girls Golf – Build a Team; LPGA*USGA Girls Golf of Phoenix; and girls’ travel teams representing the state of Arizona.
“The entire JGAA team is overwhelmed with appreciation,” said Scott McNevin, executive director of the JGAA. “Arizona junior golf is growing across the board, especially for girls. On the competitive side, more local young ladies are making an impact nationally. This gift not only helps them in big tournaments like the Girls’ Junior America’s Cup, it continues to bring more girls to the game in the first place through proven programs such as LPGA*USGA Girls Golf of Phoenix.”
In 2018 the AWGA integrated with the Arizona Golf Association, combining USGA services, tournament operations, other programs and the staff who runs them. The AWGA returned to its original status as a volunteer-only organization operating as a stand-alone public charity focused strictly on fundraising and grant-making to benefit golf programs and initiatives long supported by the AWGA.
“Thanks to the leadership of the Arizona Women’s Golf Association, the future of girls’ golf in the state couldn’t be brighter,” said Jock Holliman, Chairman of the JGAA Foundation. “The programs they support crossover to help in comprehensive ways unique to the game of golf. We both want all of Arizona’s girls to benefit from the transformative nature of the sport both on – and off – the golf course.”
