Two former JGAA golfers closed out July with major amateur victories, further solidifying the association’s reputation as a pipeline to college and elite-caliber amateur golf.
Tyler Spielman put together one of the lowest scores in Porter Cup history to capture the 67th playing of the prestigious amateur invitational at Niagara Falls Country Club — a total that outpaced past champions Jay Sigel, Phil Mickelson and David Duval. Quite the top-tier company.
The Auburn sophomore and Brophy College Preparatory product had walked off the course Friday at 56 holes, fully expecting to return Saturday for a final 18 to close out the win. He parred his first two holes of the final round before the skies opened, and tournament organizers made the call to cancel play — the first Porter Cup to end at 56 holes or fewer in more than 30 years. Spielman’s 13-under 197 held as the winning total, seven strokes clear of the runners-up with his putter doing as much work as his ball-striking down the stretch.
It was Spielman’s third trip to the Porter Cup, after finishing 69th and 53rd in his previous two appearances, and his first collegiate victory. The win makes Spielman the second Auburn player to capture the Porter Cup since 2022, joining Carson Bacha, and gives him a jolt of confidence to carry into the fall.
Lauren Nau, an incoming sophomore at Montana State University, cruised to her first Montana Women’s State Amateur title, firing a 13-under-par 203 over three rounds at Cottonwood Hills Golf Club to win the 109th playing of the event by a commanding 15 strokes. The Scottsdale native opened with a 6-under 66 that included eagles on Nos. 7 and 12, added a 2-under 70 in the second round, and closed bogey-free with a 5-under 67. Nau finished as the tournament’s only competitor to post a cumulative under-par score, with a renewed trust in her putting fueling the outstanding week.
