Matches begin Saturday August 13 at Riverside Golf & Country Club, Oregon
In the four-person-team format, the three lowest individual scores each day determine the team total. Medals are awarded to the top three teams as well as the top three individuals in the field.
The Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) is fielding a team made up of Scottsdale’s Brock Goyen, Matt Schwab and Zach Burkholder both of Chandler and Brian Seo of Phoenix.
In 2015, the team representing Hawaii place first, and Nevada’s Christian James won the Individual Title. Team Arizona – Nic Beno, Jonathan Walters, Aaron Ramos and Gavin Cohen – placed 10th in the team competition with a 23-over par performance. Cohen, of Tucson, also earned third place individually with scores of 73-72 – 145 (+1).
Although two of the last three team competitions have been won by Hawaii and British Columbia, teams from Northern and Southern California have been dominant in the Hogan Cup since its inception. Twenty-eight of the 47 Hogan Cup competitions have been won by either the Northern or Southern California squad.
The event began in 1969 in commemoration of the vast achievements and contributions to the sport by Eddie Hogan, Riverside’s long-time head golf professional who served the club from 1939 until his tragic drowning death in 1968. Hogan, an Oregon Amateur champion and PNGA Amateur champion, was credited for transforming the role of the golf professional, developing what is now considered the standard for the green grass pro shop. Hogan was also dedicated in helping the Oregon Golf Association develop its widely recognized junior golf program.
Hogan Cup alumni include tour players such as Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Fred Couples, Bryson DeChambeau, Casey Martin, Peter Jacobsen, Jeff Quinney, Patrick Cantlay, Bobby Clampett, Lennie Clements, Scott Simpson, Robert Gamez, Bill Sanders, Kirk Triplett, John Fought and Jason Gore.
