Conducted by the Junior Golf Association of Arizona, the Bruce Brown Yuma City Junior Championship teed off at Desert Hills Golf Course, May 20-21, featuring 62 junior golfers. Scottsdale’s Trey Moore ran away with this one in the final round after being tied for the lead with Mateo Berastegui at even par 72. Moore put together a stellar final round highlighted by four birdies to win the Boys Championship Division and his first JGAA tournament with a one-under-par 143 (72-71) final score. In the Girls Championship Division, Yuma’s own Elizabeth Felix posted a 17-over-par 161 (81-80) to take top honors.
The event is played annually at Yuma’s Desert Hills Golf Course. And after the passing of the long-time general manager, Bruce Brown, his wife Laura Brown and the JGAA established the Bruce Brown Memorial Scholarship in his name to award significant scholarship funds toward JGAA entry fees to deserving JGAA players. This year’s recipients are Sofia Strobel of Tucson and Yuma local Brody Driedger.
Derek McCoy of Lake Havasu City placed first in the Boys 15-18 Division, winning by eight strokes; Zachary Schaefer of Tucson won the Boys 13-14 Division by an even larger margin (nine shots); and Carson Dezzani and Ryder Erbach of Scottsdale tied for first in the Boys 11-12 Division.
Torrey Guerrero of Green Valley won in the Girls 15-18 Division in a closely contested matchup, winning by four strokes; Hannah Nguyen of Phoenix won in the Girls 13-14 Division after carding a total score of 15-over-par (76-83); Samantha Evangelista of Queen Creek won in the Girls 11-12 Division by three strokes after wrapping up with a 15-over-par performance (43-44); and Yuma native Yaritzi Felix won in the Girls 10-and-Under Division.
“This tournament surely brought together talented junior golfers from across the region to compete for the coveted championship title and help carry on Bruce Brown’s legacy in the golf community, ” said Scott McNevin, Executive Director of the JGAA. We truly appreciate the support from the Yuma community and congratulations to the junior golfers who earned the Bruce Brown Memorial Scholarship.”
