The 2022 Winter Classic teed off December 10-11 with junior golfers ages 8-18 from across the Valley competing in five age groups at Sun City West and Sun City Country Club.
Wheaton Ennis of Eagle, Idaho jumped out to a three-stroke lead at Sun City West – Grandview, thanks to a 7-under 65 loaded with four birdies a side. He cooled off with a 2-under 70 in the second round, still enough to win by two over Tucson’s Carlos Astiazaran (68-69) in second place at -7. Despite he and third place finisher Finn Meister at -6 (69-69), also of Tucson, both shooting rounds in the 60s, Ennis held on for the victory at -9.
In the Girls Championship division, contested at Sun City Country Club, Logan Hale of Erie, Colorado set the pace, with a first round 4-over-par 76. Raegan Capizzi of Scottsdale and Alexis Vakasiuola of San Tan Valley gave chase with a pair of 80s. In the final round, Hale pulled through for the win after a 6-over 78 lifted her to +10 for the championship. Capizzi and Vakasiuola once again matched scores, 76s, to finish tied for second place with identical 12-over-par performances.
Contested at Sun City West – Grandview, Evan Cross Prescott Valley shot 72-73 to win the Boys 15-18 division at 1-over par. Scottsdale’s Arjun Somani won the Boys 13-14 division, shooing 3-under par (71-70—141) at Sun City Country Club. In the Boys 11-12 division, Sam Basta (37-36) of Phoenix defended his title with the win at 1-over par, and Rydder Erbach of Scottsdale, likewise, posted a repeat victory in the Boys 10 and Under division held at Sun City Country Club after shooting 40-36, 4-over-par 76.
In the Girls 15-18 division at Sun City Country Club, Elizabeth Felix, Yuma shot 78-80—158 to win at 14-over par. Alyssa Rigby of Vancouver, Washington posted 80-79—159 (+15) at Sun City Country Club to take the Girls 13-14 division. Aubrey Pizzillo of Goodyear posted 39-40—79 (+7) at Sun City Country Club to take the Girls 11-12 division. And Jessica Hoerr of Phoenix won the Girls 10 and Under division at 19-over-par 91 (46-45), played at Sun City Country Club.
