Makes make the turn at 7-under 29
PHOENIX – The 2022 Summer Classic teed off July 12-13 with the Boys and Girls Championship divisions as well as 15-18 Boys and Girls divisions competing at Kierland Golf Club, while the 13-14 divisions were contested at Talking Stick Golf Club.
Tyler Spielman of Cave Creek set a stiff pace, with a 5-under 67 in the first round to lead by one stroke heading into the final round where he put together an unforgettable finishing round. He jumped on the throttle immediately on front nine, with consecutive birdies on the first five holes as well as 7 and 9 to make the turn at 7-under 29!
Picking up two more at 10 and 16, Spielman posted a bogey-free 63 to finish at -14 for the championship. Two players finished tied for second place at 5-under par. Dylan Kohner of Peoria and Kendall McCain of Flagstaff both shot 71-68 for a share of runner-up honors.
Spielman’s win comes on the heels of a strong T3 finish in June at the State Junior Golf Championship, Kohner recently notched a runner-up in June at the always competitive Thunderbird Junior Classic, and it’s McCain’s third consecutive second place finish in as many weeks.
In the Girls Championship division, Talia Gutman of Scottsdale and Lily Huether of Tucson held the first round lead after matching even-par 72s, before Kate Hauptman of Phoenix separated herself from the pack in the second round. She added a 4-under 68 to her first round, 2-over 74 to settle at -2 for the championship, two strokes ahead of Gutman – soon to play for Sonoma State University – and Huether who both finished with 74s.
In the Boys 15-18 division Gilbert’s Austin Bullard shot +1, 73-72 for the win, while Peyton DeCosta of Glendale came in first in the Girls 15-18 division at +12 (77-79). Preston Brooke of Gilbert won the Boys 13-14 division at 2-under par with scores of 68 and 72. And Finley Foshie of Mesa won the Girls 13-14 division, firing 73-75, 5-over par for the championship.
