The 45th annual Desert Mashie Spring Championship hosted the second Notah Begay Regional Qualifier on March 21–22, featuring a field of 308 players across Encanto’s 18- and 9-hole golf courses and Orange Tree Golf Club. Juniors who advance from this local qualifier will move on to the Regional AZ Qualifier at Whirlwind Golf Club in early September. Low scores and highlight-worthy moments were on full display at this celebrated event steeped in rich history.

In the Boys Championship division at Encanto Golf Course, Brendan Morua of California caught fire on Saturday, carding a bogey-free front nine with four birdies en route to a 4-under 66. His standout round was matched by Cruz Carter of Scottsdale and Nolan Wilson of Litchfield Park, who also posted 66s, setting up a tightly contested final round.

The leaderboard shifted dramatically on Sunday as new contenders emerged, including Nathan Ash of Tempe, Catcher Dahm of Scottsdale, and Sam Meltzer of Paradise Valley. Ash surged with a tournament-best 7-under 63 to apply pressure down the stretch. Morua, however, answered the challenge, matching his opening round with another 4-under performance to secure a two-shot victory at 8-under par. Ash, Dahm, and Meltzer finished tied for second at 6-under.

On the girls side, the Championship division came down to a head-to-head battle between Addison Taylor and Charlene Lamb of Scottsdale. Taylor set the tone early with the only sub-70 round of the division, opening with a 1-under 69. Lamb stayed within striking distance, delivering a steady performance to keep the pressure on.

Facing final-round pressure, Taylor remained composed despite a more conservative approach that allowed Lamb to close the gap. Timely birdies and clutch par saves proved decisive, as Taylor held on to win by three strokes at 2-over par, earning her first victory of the season. Lamb finished solo second at 5-over, while Ariela Trejo of Tucson and Ashley Malko of Gilbert tied for third at 7-over.

In the Boys 15–18 division at Encanto, Carson Moniz of Wyoming ran away with the title, winning by seven strokes at 4-under par (69-67—136). Alyxandra Sumner of Scottsdale captured the Girls 15–18 division by four strokes at 5-over par (75-70—145).

At Orange Tree Golf Club, March Osland of Paradise Valley claimed the Boys 13–14 division with the only under-par total at 2-under (72-70—142). Scottsdale’s Cecelia Sumner won the Girls 13–14 division by five shots at 4-over par (74-74—148).

On the Encanto 9-hole course, Thomas Flancbaum of Surprise edged the Boys 11–12 division by one stroke at 4-over par (61-63—124). Annie Do of Phoenix secured the Girls 11–12 title at 8-over par (65-63—128).

In the Boys 8–10 division, Sahir Nainwal of Gilbert earned his first victory at 3-over par (31-32—63). Jennah Um of Chandler captured the Girls 8–10 division by one stroke with a 9-over total (36-33—69) at Encanto.

“The Desert Mashie is more than a tournament—it’s a legacy that unites our community through the game of golf,” said Scott McNevin, Executive Director of the JGAA. “Since 1946, this event has opened doors for young players, creating opportunities and honoring the spirit of those who paved the way. We’re proud to carry this tradition forward and make the game more accessible to the next generation.”

The Desert Mashie Golf Club—formed by a group of Phoenix-area golf enthusiasts in 1946—first held the Desert Mashie Spring Championship in 1981 at Encanto Golf Course and became a JGAA-sanctioned event in 1992. Founding members included Dr. Thomas A. Crump, Aubrey C. Aldridge, Earl Le Near, Earnest S. Bartlett, Dr. Lowell C. Wormley, Curtis “Dock” Earl, William “Robbie” Robinson, Ray Mercado, and Densil Perdue. Today, Desert Mashie is the oldest public golf club in Arizona.
