Mother nature had different plans for this year’s Prescott City Junior Championship, held July 9-10 at Antelope Hills Golf Club. The inclement weather and lightning delay led to round 2 being canceled, but the Boys Championship division managed to finish the final day of play.
Connor Bringhurst of Scottsdale, winner of the Desert Mashie Championship, fired on all cylinders as the only player in the field to record two rounds in the 60s (69-64). With six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 17th, Bringhurst shot his lowest round of the season at 8-under par to blow past the rest of the competitors in the second round by six strokes. Bringhurst now becomes a two-time winner on the JGAA and climbs his way up to No. 4 in the Player of Year points race. Austin Bullard of Gilbert, Shravan Ramesh of Scottsdale and hometown kid Evan Cross all tied for runner up at 4-under par.
All the other divisions failed to finish the final round of play, meaning the first-round leaders took home the hardware except for the Boys Championship division. At 5-over-par 76, Caroline Hoang of Scottsdale and Lily Huether of Tucson each tied for first place in the Girls Championship division. Madalyn Gubernick of Cave Creek finished solo third place at 8-over-par 79.
For the Boys 15-18 division, Jackson Carr of Prescott won in his own backyard at 3-under par (68). Kallum De Guia of Tucson claimed the Boys 13-14 division at 1-under par, the only round under par across the leaderboard. Gabriel Mathur of Scottsdale went low in the Boys 11-12 division at 5-under-par 31 to win by three strokes. Joey Morin of Gilbert shoots 35 to go 1-under par and win the Boys 10 & Under division by four strokes.
Switching over to the girls’ divisions, Isabel Helgemoe of Scottsdale cards an even-par 71 to clinch the Girls 15-18 division. Samantha Evangelista of Queen Creek took the top spot in the Girls 13-14 division at 8-over par. Fable Williams of Sun City recorded a 3-over par round to take the Girls 10 & Under division.
