The last PING Junior Master’s Series event of the year took place at the historic Phoenix Country Club for the annual Willie Low Invitational presented by MJ Insurance, June 24-25. Four players in the Boys Championship division fired off first round scores in the 60s. Brody Leid of Phoenix led the charge after day one with a 3-under 68, but the margin was slim as Tyler Weihe of Tempe, Sean Moore of Mesa, Adam Croix of Peoria and Dylan Boenning of Phoenix all remained within arm’s reach. Boenning caught steam in the final round, birdieing three of his first six holes and only recording one bogey for the day. The leaderboard became a dual match between Brody Leid and Dylan Boenning who were exchanging blows throughout the round. After regulation, the victor was yet to be determined as both players ended play at 5-under par. A playoff ensued between Leid and Boenning, but only took one hole as Dylan won on the first playoff hole with a birdie on hole 18. Boenning continues the impressive 2024 campaign with his third win of the season. Tyler Weihe placed solo third at 2-under par.
For the girls, Cynthia Lang of Chandler and Izzy Piazza of Phoenix each carded opening-round 72s to separate themselves from the rest of the field by six strokes. Another dual was in the works, but Piazza had different plans. She maintained momentum from her first-round success and didn’t look back, putting up a 2-under 33 on the front nine and total final-round score of 3-over 74. Piazza won the championship division by a resounding six strokes ahead of Cynthia Lang who concluded the event at 10-over par. Piazza receives her second victory of the season and first PING Junior Master’s Series trophy. Riley Doherty of Cave Creek and Kate Hauptman of Phoenix tied for third place at 11-over par.
