JGAA alum and Pepperdine sophomore transfer Manhanth Chirravuri claims the 99th Arizona Amateur Championship at Desert Highlands in Scottsdale after draining a 25-foot eagle putt on 18 to clinch the victory. The championship match was a thrilling contest against ASU’s Kiko Coelho and came down to the very end.
“I played really well all week,” said Chirravuri during an interview with Arizona Golf Association. “I think I won 18 three times, and you need to win 18 if you’re going to win this tournament. I played great coming in, Kiko played awesome as well. He made so many putts that kept the match going.”
Chirravuri led most of the match after going up two thru 12 holes of play. Coelho climbed his way back due to an excellent display of putting when he needed it most. He countered Coelho’s rock-solid putting with outstanding approach shots from his iron play.
“Congratulations to our JGAA alums on an outstanding performance at this year’s Arizona Amateur Championship,” said JGAA Executive Director Scott McNevin. “It’s incredible to see our players develop throughout their careers and succeed at the next level.”
Tyler Spielman of Cave Creek took home top honors during stroke play at the Arizona Amateur Championship. Spielman, currently playing JGAA events, fired off a nine-under 135 (70-65) outing in the first two rounds of qualifying to secure his first AGA championship accolade.
